Diese Internationale Norm legt zwei Verfahren zur Bestimmung der Emissions-Schalldruckpegel an Arbeitsplätzen und anderen, sich in der Nähe befindenden, festgelegten Orten von Maschinen und Geräten durch Berechnung aus dem Schallleistungspegel fest. Hauptzweck dieser Bestimmung ist es, einen Vergleich verschiedener Geräte einer bestimmten Maschinenart unter festgelegten Umgebungsbedingungen und genormten Aufstellungs- und Betriebsbedingungen zu ermöglichen. Die erhaltenen Werte dürfen auch für die Angabe und die Nachprüfung von Emissions-Schalldruckpegeln, wie in ISO 4871 festgelegt, verwendet werden.
Emissions-Schalldruckpegel werden mit der gleichen Frequenz- und Zeitbewertung oder in den gleichen Frequenzbändern bestimmt, wie sie für die Bestimmung der Schallleistungspegel verwendet wurden.
