Diese Norm behandelt symmetrische Kupfer- und optische Signalträger. Sie deckt auch die Verkabelung für drahtlose Signalträger-Systeme ab, nicht jedoch das Medium Wireless selbst. Zusätzliche Medien werden in der IEC 61784-5-Reihe abgedeckt. Diese Norm ist eine Begleitnorm zu den Kommunikationsnetzen der Automatisierungszellen und speziell zu den in IEC 61158 (Reihe) und IEC 61784 (Reihe) beschriebenen Kommunikationsnetzen.
